Caring for your handmade ceramics
Everything in the shop is stoneware: clay fired hot enough to become dense and strong. Look after it like this and it will be used for years.
Is it dishwasher safe?
Mugs, bowls, plates and jugs are dishwasher safe. Washing painted pieces by hand keeps them looking new for longer.
Can it go in the microwave?
Yes, except anything in the metallic bronze glaze. Metallic glazes should never go in the microwave.
Can it go in the oven?
The tableware isn’t made for the oven. Sudden changes in temperature can crack stoneware, so don’t pour boiling water into a pot straight from the fridge or put a cold dish somewhere very hot.
Bronze glazes and one-offs
Wash these by hand in warm soapy water and dry them straight away. Pieces made for display, like the Big Bobble Urn, say so on their product page and aren’t for food or water.
Is handmade stoneware food safe?
Mugs, bowls, plates and jugs are glazed for food and drink. Display pieces are marked as display only.
Stoneware, porcelain or earthenware?
Stoneware is fired hotter than earthenware, which makes it denser, stronger and less likely to chip. Porcelain is finer and more translucent. Everything in this shop is stoneware.
Vases and water
Vases that are glazed inside hold water, and the product page says so. Empty and dry them between bunches of flowers.
Chips and cracks
A small chip on the foot doesn’t matter. Retire a mug with a crack or a chip on the rim.
